the mod that makes it better at low speed is predominantly the updatedchip.
this is why i developed the chip. apart from idle and low speed areasit is
much the same as the std um241 chip that ultimap/fim sell. i call it
um241b12 - it is to suit a bike with the 45/50mm termi kit, but otherwise as
delivered - well, with cam timing set to std spec. basically what you have.
i'm not sure how the better ports - see below (if you have them) will effect
the suitability of this chip, but i have run it in '02 bikes here and it
seems to work well. much better than the dp.
the cam timing and extended trumpet mods will make more mid range power,
without costing any top end. boring the throttles should help the
engine make more top end. none of this is "have to do" stuff. it just all
helps them go better without pulling it apart too much or spending a heap.
the trumpet extensions are just pieces of alloy tube i machine to make a
spacer. i can certainly make some for you, but you may think they're a
little expensive for what they are. if you have access to a lathe you
can easily do it yourself. trumpets are extended 17mm using machined pieces
of alloy you can see in the photos. i do it with an inner and outer
sleeve, just because that's how it was easiest to get the appropriate tubing
from the supplier. there is also a photo in one of doug's reports as to how
he does it.
the throttles i bore using a 4 jaw chuck to hold them in the recess at
the trumpet end where the trumpet sits. this ensures i can get them set up
precisely. i don't remove the throttle blades or shaft, just machine up
thru the bottom. any good machine shop should be able to acheive this
easily. i use an approximate 4 degree angle cut, from the bottom up. i
cut until the taper runs for the very bottom of the outlet up to the bottom
of the air bypass ports - as you should be able to see in the photos. i
don't increase the outlet diameter from 44mm tho. the first time you do it
it's a bit worrying (due to teh replacement cost), but i've done a few now, so
we just set them up and cut away.
the '02 models seem to have better inlet ports. some if not all. doug
lofgren has had one that he decided wasn't worth porting, compared to
the '00 and '01 models he has seen. if you contact doug -
http://www.visi.com/~moperfserv/ - he will be able to tell you exactly
what to look for in the inlet ports to decide if yours are good or bad.
i have a chip to suit an unported '01 model with reset cam timing, bored
throttles and extended trumpets - um241bb51. and another to suit a
ported '01 model with otherwise identical mods - um241bb4, which would be
somewhat equivalent to the '02 model we feel. cam timing used is 104 inlet, 108
exhaust centerlines. i use the genuine part offset keys (also in the dp
catalouges) to do this, as the cams are generally fairly close to std
spec of 110/102. we haven't had to move any more than 10 degrees so far i
think.
hope that answers your questions. doug will be able to give more info
on std ports than i, and the trumpet and bored throttles ideas i stole from
him pretty much.
