After tree Sidecar Motorcycle Worldchampionship titles in row in the years 1992,1993 and 1994, the all new engine development project of the V4 500 engine was started. Based on longterm visions from Rolf Biland, a revolutionary new concept was designed and developed at swissauto. The engine should be suitable for the 500 cc Sidecar as well as for the Solo class.
It was the target to build a most compact, lightweight and powerful 2 stroke engine of it's class, which would have the capabilities to compete against all the japanese factory bikes from Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki. The layout was a V4 engine with a single balance shaft and a cassette gearbox. The engine concept offered the possibility to fire at different angles to choose "big-bang" or "screamer" characteristics to fulfil the various wishes from the riders.
The engine was used first time at the BArcelona GP in Spain with a sensational lap record and the pole position after the qualifiyng practice. Only an electrical problem could stop the victory of the new product in the first race.
The engine was used from 6 different teams in the World Championship 1995. 5 of the total 7 GP's could be won from Biland and Guedel, which was enough to catch the constructors title for swissauto.
Swissauto stopped the Sidecar activities when the class was reconfigured to be not anymore in the Status of a World championship end of 1996. With this new engine, not less than 12 pole positions and 10 GP wins was reached in total 15 races.
Beginning in the year 1996 swissauto started to participate in the GP1 ( Solobike )500 cc World Championship. The bikes from elf and Mz, later also the Mz-Weber was equiped with this engine in the races. But also Kenny roberts and Aprilia racing has built bikes with the swissauto V4.
This project was stopped, when end of 1999 the FIM rules changed to the new 1000 cc 4 stroke engines.
The most fabulous debut within 20 years, 15 top ten rankings, 2 pole positions and two lap records as well as highest top speeds on several racetracks are the proud results of this short but very intensive project.
