"Riding the 800s is like playing a video game.
There´s a lot less room for mistakes, but I enjoy it. With the 800 you have to do everything perfectly, you have to hit your braking marker, you have to ride from kerb to kerb and you have to get on the throttle just right. It´s all about timing and it has to be perfect. You have to be more precise, and that´s fun.
But I do miss the 990s.
I miss backing it into the turns and getting it lit up, sliding out of corners.
The Kawasaki´s traction control system is so advanced.
On the 800 four-stroke, the majority of the time you just hit apex, hold the thing wide open and it does the work for you. Back with the 500 two-stroke I´d come out of a corner startin off with about three or four per cent throttle, then I´d start opening it up, but I wouldn´t have the thing anywhere near wide open until I was past the kerb. I wouldn´t dare.
It´s like being a computer technician to get the ultimate lap.
You have to back down the control systems, otherwise the engine´s too tame. You have to find that fine line between the traction control working and not working; you have to find what´s fast and what isn´t. If you use to much traction control the engine cuts out too much and you don´t go anywhere."
"First time I rode the Kawasaki 800 it was frightening.
Just because of de Puniet´s set up. De Puniet doesn´t hang off the bike, he sits in one position and just pulls the throttle. If he makes it, he makes it, if he doesn´t he goes down. I´m not sure he has a clear understanding of a decent set-up."
