2008 ROAD RACING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
On the 14th of June, a UEM delegation met in Jerez (Spain) with representatives of Dorna, of the Albacete track and of RFME, in order to define technical and organisational issues of the Road Racing
European Championship, which will be held on the 12th of October on the Spanish track of Albacete in a single event.
This is a completely new format for the competition which will see three categories of racing, 125 GP, Supersport and Superstock 1000, all competing under FIM regulations.
After a review of the provisional rankings of the different preliminary championships (national and regional) and, being not possible to verify the exact age of participating riders, it was decided together by all participants to the meeting to review the previously established age limits and to allow a larger number of riders admitted to the event.
In the 125 cc. class the age limit remains 25 years, while in the two other classes it was abolished at all, maintaining original limits (20 years for the Supersport 600 cc. and 23 years for the Stocksport 1000 cc.)
for assigning the Junior European Champion title.
The above decision should, therefore, allow the presence in Albacete of the best European riders and should allow also to award the most promising youngsters with the Junior title, maintaining the original philosophy to support the growth of young talents.
The riders eligible to enter the competition and battle for the coveted title of European Champion 2008 will be the top 5 riders in the European Cup and the top 5 from the following national championships;
Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Also permitted to enter are the top 4 riders in the following series; Alpe Adria, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Not-classified riders in the selection tests could equally, depending on available places, participate to the final through a wild card, which will be assigned by UEM, in agreement with RFME, based on eventual national grading lists.
The rules and registration modules will be soon sent to all FMNs, in order to have enough time to know all aspects and inform riders.
There will be €90,000 of prize money to be shared out across the three championships.
