Hi Hasse
Don't know if you're responding to my 5 cents worth, but if you are, here is another 5 cents worth. Before I made any airbox modifications on my first Trixie (all I'd done was give it a K&N and Staintune pipes up to then), the dyno showed extremely rich running, which led the mechanic to suspect lack of air. We then took the filter and filter cover out and ran it again - instant power gains (approximately 9-10 ps). We knew then that it needed more air and that's when I cut a big hole in the front of the top part of the airbox. I can't quite remember, but I think we ended up with putting in 140 jets before the mechanic was happy with the air/fuel mixture. With all the fine-tuning done we had 85 ps with a very smooth power curve.
Because I now knew that Trixies need more air I made similar airbox modifications on my second Trixie, except that this time I did not cut the snorkle off. Instead I cut a number of holes in the front of the box and, as you guessed, I also cut away quite a bit of the foam. The objective was to give it more air to breath, so any obstructions to the direct air flow (the foam) had to be removed. The dyno showed again 85 ps but we ended up with a 146 jetting to get the correct air/fuel mixture. The power curve was not as smooth as on the first Trixie - I think that's because the first Trixie's airbox mods worked better than the ones on my second Trixie, i.e. two large holes work better than four smaller ones plus the original air inlet. Performance wise, however, I can't feel any difference between the two bikes. Maybe Rossi could feel it, but then, I don't think he would bother. What is noticable, though, is that in both cases fuel consumption improved dramatically. I can do 300 km before switching to reserve now with normal riding (sticking to the speed limit - sort of).
Cheers
